Registration is now open for the sixth annual Newport Night Run, which will be held on April 6th, 2018. The 5K road race benefits the Newport Public Education Foundation and is produced by Gray Matter Marketing. Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in this annual favorite event!

The NPEF is an independent, non-profit whose mission is to improve the performance of Newport public school children by enhancing their educational opportunities and by building broad-based community support for quality public education. Since its foundation in 1991, the NPEF has awarded more than $300,000 in grants to classroom teachers and community partners to provide innovative educational experiences in Newport’s public schools. For the 2018-2019 academic year, NPEF awarded 28 enrichment grants totaling more than $22,000 in enrichment grants, spanning all grade levels and curriculum areas. A portion of every registration for the Newport Night Run, as well as all sponsorship fees, are donated directly to the NPEF in support of their mission.

“A community thrives when its members take an interest in the development of their youth,” says Mary Ellen Atkins, President of the Newport Public Education Foundation “Newport Public Schools play a vital role in the development of our community’s youth, and the Newport Public Education Foundation plays an important role in supporting the needs of our schools. Because of the generosity and commitment of our community partners, the Newport Night Run is a fundraising success that touches the lives of hundreds of students and allows the Newport Public Education Foundation to continue its important mission.”

Thanks in part to funds raised by the Newport Night Run for the NEPF, the Claiborne Pell school’s thriving community gardens will install a new greenhouse, expanding the growing cycle and allowing students to plant seeds earlier in the spring and later in the fall. Thompson Middle School’s fifth and sixth-grade students will visit Seamen’s Church Institute’s new interactive exhibit showcasing the maritime history of Newport and Narragansett Bay. Students in Rogers High School’s advertising and design program will receive a new embossing/die cutting machine, bringing their greeting card designs to a more advanced and professional level. And, Newport Public Schools’ long-running collaboration with the Newport Restoration Foundation will continue, inspiring students to create artwork to be displayed at Rough Point.

The Newport Night Run is Newport’s only after-hours 5K race. The course starts and finishes at Rogers High School, following a loop on Hazards Road, Ocean Drive, Hammersmith Road, Beacon Hill Road and finally returning to Wickham Road for the finish. The course is lined with luminaries and lit mileage markers, and participants are encouraged to wear bright-colored or neon clothing and run with headlamps, lights, and glow-sticks.

The Newport Night Run’s charitable impact would not be possible without the support of its sponsors:
