It may be safe to say that spring has finally arrived in Newport. On Saturday night, more than 900 runners gathered at Rogers High School to ring in the start of the warmer running season at the fifth annual Newport Night Run. The event, which benefits the Newport Public Education Foundation, had the largest number of finishers in the event’s history, with 902 runners and walkers completing the 3.1-mile long course.

Ben Chase, 16 years old from Portsmouth, Rhode Island, won the race with an elapsed time of 17 minutes, 39 seconds. He was followed shortly after by Daniel Rutledge (Middleboro, MA) and Graeme Clougher (Newport, RI)

Andrea Gregory from Riverside, Rhode Island took home top honors for female runners, completing the course in 20 minutes and 17 seconds. Lauren Murray (Methuen, MA) and Allison Vinciguerra (Tiverton, RI) rounded out the top women’s’ spots.

The course featured lighted mile-marker signs, plenty of glowsticks and fun light features, and water stop volunteers from local groups, including Salve University.
